A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
Known as A.I., this science fiction film was released in 2001. The screenplay by Steven Spielberg (who also directed) was based on a 1969 short story Supertoys Last All Summer Long by Brian Aldiss. This was Williams and Spielberg’s 17th collaboration. The film stars Jude Law and Haley Joel Osment.
The film is set in a futuristic post climate-change society and tells the story of a childlike android, David, that has been programmed to have the ability to love.
John Williams’ score for AI didn’t win any awards, but was nominated for three:
– Academy Awards: best original score (the winner was Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring)
– Golden Globe Awards: best original score (the winner was Moulin Rouge)
– Grammy Awards: best score soundtrack for visual media (the winner was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)
I have never seen the movie, but the community band I play in played the theme. It isn’t one of my favourite John Williams’ scores, but it fits the genre of the film very well. What do you think?

I’ve seen it, many years ago. It’s basically Pinocchio. Very touching! Can’t recall the score, though.

There you go! I would never have picked up from the blurb is was a Pinocchio remake.

I’ve never seen the film either, AJ. Not sure how I missed it as I usually love me a Spielberg.
You’re off to a great start. Happy A-Zing!

Thanks, Deb. There are so many Spielberg movies out there I think it would be easy to miss a few.

Ooo I’ve never seen this movie either but I played a bit of the YouTube clip and I liked it!! Very suspenseful!!
Also, happy year of us being blogging buddies! A to Z brining people together haha!! 💛

Our 1 year anniversary 😉 It’s actually crazy to think a year has passed. Where does the time go?

Right up my interest ally, AJ. Good start to #atoz–and good luck!

Thanks, Jacqui. Good lkuck to you to (you already get so many comments – I don’t know how you stay on top of it all).

Never seen the movie, either. The theme is pretty standard stuff for Williams, not that it’s a bad thing. Good start!
April 2, 2019 at 9:26 am
It is a bit standard – perhaps why it doesn’t stand out. Sometimes I think the music can sound better when you have the action with it, maybe that’s what this one needs?

I haven’t seen AI either, but I do like the music. Pretty dramatic!
April 2, 2019 at 9:42 am
No one here has seen the movie – I wonder how it did at the box office? It is dramatic music which obviously suits the genre.
April 2, 2019 at 10:10 am
Definitely a SciFi feel to that music. And no, I haven’t seen the movie either.
April 2, 2019 at 1:01 pm
I bet you could play the music to someone and if asked, they’d pick SF as the genre it went with.
April 2, 2019 at 10:53 am
I saw the movie. Don’t bother. I don’t remember the score very well.
April 2, 2019 at 2:23 pm
Lol, I won’t then. It doesn’t seem to have been one people talk about.
April 2, 2019 at 10:58 am
Oh, it was Pinocchio all right! In case you had missed it, there was even an underwater scene with a Blue Fairy in the remains of an amusement park.

Sue, I wonder what the symbolism for the growing nose was?
April 2, 2019 at 12:14 pm
Haha I have no idea

I think all they really needed was the child who wants to be a real live boy.

Good point =)

Hi AJ. 🙂 Your selection of theme is very unique and interesting. Being in the software industry, the word artificial intelligence surely dragged me. I enjoy watch Sci-Fi movies but never bothered to find out anything more than that. Your A2Z blogs will surely help me reduce the gap. Looking forward to your other posts in this series. Good luck.

Thanks Anjana. This was a much easier first post than yours *grin*. I chose my post because it is something I enjoy and gave me an excuse to have to listen to his music =)

I didn’t realise John Williams did the score, although I should have because I have seen it and his style is kind of distinctive – LOL. The film starts off well, but kind of loses the plot half way through 🙂

Not seen this film but I like the music. Looking forward to the rest of your challenge.

I think this music is a style people either like or dislike. Glad you like it!
