A to Z Challenge: R (serial killers)

Ronald Dominique — Bayou Strangler

Fast Facts:

  • Born in 1964 in Louisiana
  • Murdered over 23 men although the reason was never known
  • A tip-off from one of his almost-victims led to his arrest
  • Charged with murder
  • Convicted of 8 murders (although he confessed to 23) and sentenced to 8 life terms

Dominique grew up in a small bayou community where he was picked on by other students. As an adult he led a double life; a well-liked person who volunteered with senior citizens during the day and at night a cross-dresser who cruised gay clubs.

His victims were all male and were targeted at gay bars, specifically those he thought would accept money for sex (mostly homeless men). When he took them home he asked to tie them up, offering them money. If they said no he didn’t harm them, but if they said yes, he raped them and killed them by strangulation or suffocation, dumping the bodies in remote areas.

At first, the bodies weren’t linked to the one perpetrator. A tip-off from an almost-victim of Dominique’s led police to him. He confessed to 23 murders although he was only convicted of 8 and sentenced to 8 life terms.

  1. Oh, yuk! And I bet the people he volunteered with during the day said, “RONALD did all that? But he’s such a NICE young man!”

    • It makes you wonder how he kept up the pretense during the day? Living such a black and white existence between his night and day lives must have been hard to maintain.

  2. A sad puppy. HIs appearance supports the stereotype of the young man gaming in his parents’ basement, lost and alone.

  3. Oh gosh I bet those poor senior citizens were shocked beyond belief! What conflicted man.

    • They probably couldn’t believe he’d do something like that. His confession must have rocked them.

  4. Interesting he only killed those who allowed him to tie them up. Life’s about choices, innit?

    • I wonder if those who made the “right” choice ever realised the close call they’d had?

  5. It’s strange to see a male killer targeting only men. The majority that I know pick women. You do wonder how many people had lucky escapes!

    • I guess when there seems to be a sexual motive to the crimes it makes sense – but makes you realise there are far more straight, white male serial killers than any other demographic.
