Permission to make mistakes

Sometimes I need to be reminded it’s okay not to get it right the first go. This has been one of those weeks. I’m naturally a perfectionist, so it can be a bit of a battle to accept things don’t always have to be perfect.

I have a quote stuck to my desk – I’ve read it quite a bit this week:

Give yourself permission to do it badly at first. Improve as you go. Don’t aim for perfection – it doesn’t exist. Perfectionism is a form of procrastination. If you give into it, it will hold you back from fully expressing yourself and kill your creative energy.

Are you a perfectionist?

  1. Hehehe! I remember writing on the first page of one of my journals from my younger days: “I hereby give myself permission to write absolute crap within the pages of this journal.”

  2. Are you kidding? I’ve found cringeworthy stuff on the pages of my PUBLISHED work! If I’d been a perfectionist, though, I’d never have submitted my stuff.

    • I think that’s a really good point, Sue. If you focus too much on perfection, you will never get anywhere in life, writing or other.

  4. I had an issue making a mask this week. This so applies… (The mistakes are teaching me so much.)

    • Mistakes are how we learn. Something I keep trying to teach my Barbarians, but I’m not sure they’ve got it yet.
