Today is the first day of Spring in Australia. If I could do cartwheels without killing myself I would.
We don’t use the equinox in Australia to herald the change of seasons. Instead, the seasons change on the 1st day of September (spring), December (summer), March (autumn) and June (winter). The reason is twofold… the hottest part of our year is January and the coldest is July, so those months are the middle of our summer and winter seasons. The fact the seasons change on the first day of the month is convenience.
To me it makes sense to have the peak or trough in the middle of the season, rather than to choose the longest or shortest day (which doesn’t align with temperature – at least, not in Australia). And having the whole month be part of just one season is simpler.
Regardless of when a season starts, Spring is definitely my favourite – because it means winter. is. done. I’m not a cold weather lover at all. Bring on the heat 🙂
What’s your favourite season and why?

Fall is my favourite season and I am just a few weeks from it! I love the cool weather and the awesome clothes!

I do like being able to wear my boots in the cooler months, but that doesn’t outdo my need for heat!

Hahaha totally fair!

Didn’t know that about Australia. How interesting. So for a few weeks, we’re only one season apart.

I hadn’t thought of it that way, but yes! 🙂

It makes sense to count your seasons this way. Even though our fall “officially” starts on the equinox (September 22 this year), most Canadians would agree the fall season starts after the labour day long weekend (first week of September), when the kiddos head back to school.

I think it makes sense (and it is easier to always know when the seasons change).

Meteorologists do the same thing and call the first of September, December, March, and June the beginning of autumn, winter, spring, and summer (or the opposites in your case). Makes sense to me, though here we say that summer runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Makes more sense than “autumn begins at 3:21 PM on September 22″…

Funny how it’s so different. Who’d have thought it was so hard to pick the first day of spring!

Seasons in southern California are more of a concept than an actual lived experience. We’re still in hot season right now. I’m not even going to bother putting a blanket on my bed until at least October, if then. Chilly season should begin in November, but it can take until December to truly manifest. (We get maybe a week or two of true cold–for us–in chilly season.)
Happy spring.

Thanks, Liz 🙂 That’s what it used to be for me when I lived in Queensland. But now that we live inland and at a higher elevation we definitely get the four seasons.

I am also happy when I can leave winter behind! Spring is my favorite, followed by fall.

Very interesting facts about Australia, thank you for sharing! Here in France seasons are… well, like everywhere else in Western Europe, and of course impacted by global climate change. I’m not a complicated one, as I like every season! Spring is great because of the flowers and longer days, Summer is great because of the sun and holidays, Fall is great because of the trees colors, and Winter is great because snow is beautiful. See? Not a complicated one ;))
