Life has been getting unbalanced of late. I feel like I’m being tugged in many directions, none of which being the direction I want to go. I need to lessen my load. It can be hard to let things go – for me I feel guilt I am letting people down. But I have to think, what about letting myself down? Shouldn’t that count for something?
For too many years I fear I’ve let the needs of others come before for the needs of my own. It’s best put by the famous quote by Bryan Dyson, Coca-Cola’s former CEO, in which he refers to the balls of life. The extract of his commencement speech to Georgia Tech (6th Sept, 1991) goes like this:
[…] Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit. And you’re keeping all of these in the air.
You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life. {Bryan Dyson}
My glass balls are starting to look too scuffed and marked. I need to take more care of them. I plan on making sure that happens in the future.
