Canberra: Embassies

Botswana Embassy

Being the nation’s capital, a lot of countries from around the world have embassies (or high commissions) here. The embassies are clustered in a number of inner suburbs, such as Yarralumla and Deakin. I find it a lot of fun driving around and looking at their different architecture as many of them have been constructed in a style that reflects their culture (for example, the USA and Botswana).

Even better, though, is when the embassies open their doors to the public. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to visit many of the embassies and high commissions from a few years past when Canberra organised “Windows to the World”. Sadly, after two events it seems it is no longer happening.

Some embassies (such as Thailand) run annual events which are a lot of fun to attend. Others open their doors for special occasions. If you get the chance, the embassies are well worth a visit.
