Eurovision back on

Long time readers of my blog will know I am a Eurovision tragic. Last year, thanks to covid, like a lot of things, Eurovision was cancelled. But I’ve just found out that it is being held this year – and it’s next week!

This is me right now…

This year it is being held in Rotterdam as the winning country hosts it the following year. So yes, Holland won it in 2019.

If you are unfamiliar with Eurovision it is an international singing contest, with each participating country sending one performance to represent the country.

Seen the movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga? This Will Ferell comedy came out in 2020 and it really does capture the essence of Eurovision. I felt the movie improved as it went on, and in particular the Eurovision contest and music could easily have been the real thing. A lot of previous contestants also make guest appearances in the movie. You don’t have to be a Eurovision tragic to enjoy this movie, but it probably helps. But it will give you an idea of what Eurovision is.

I’ll probably (okay, I will) talk more about Eurovision over the next week or two. Have you ever seen Eurovision? Love it, hate it or indifferent?

To close, here’s the winner from 2019:

  1. A “tragic”? I’ve never heard that term before. Well, I guess I am one too. I’ve seen it broadcast when I was in the Netherlands, but I can’t seem to access the show itself from Canada. I’ve had to resort to seeing whatever was available on YouTube. I hope Iceland wins. I feel they could have won last year.

    • I guess “tragic” must be an Aussie slang term I didn’t realise was Aussie slang! Oops, lol. It means ‘someone who is intensely interested or absorbed in a topic’.

What a shame you don’t’ get the broadcast. We’ve had it for years – first the BBC version and then our own. And now that Australia is a part of Eurovision and compete, there’s no fear of losing the broadcast.

Aaawww I’m glad your show is back on! I have heard of it but never watched it. Why are you called a “tragic”? Lol that doesn’t sound good!

    • Yeah, apologies on “tragic” – hadn’t realised it was an Aussie term! It means ‘someone who is intensely interested or absorbed in a topic’. Not bad at all!!

  3. It’s been around as long as I have, and I am just hearing about it?

That’s okay, just found out about Postmodern Jukebox too.

    • I’m not sure how well Eurovision translates to an American audience, which is probably why you haven’t heard of it. But I think you might enjoy the music.

  4. Yes, I remember you mentioning it. It’s not a thing in the US. In fact, the video you included is unavailable for me to watch. Glad you have it back. Enjoy.

    • Poop. I hoped by using an official Eurovision clip it would work in the US. I’m looking forward to next weekend. I’ve “booked” the TV so The Hub and Barbarians know it’s all mine 😉

  5. Was it “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence? Your video isn’t available in the US; I found it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51u5fnyrGj4

  6. Yes, that’s it, John. It’s a shame you can’t watch Eurovision in the US because I think you would enjoy watching it.

  7. Fun! I’ve not seen Eurovision, but I did enjoy the movie.
