Life can tumble

It’s funny how in a split second things can change. This morning I had just finished making the Barbarian’s school lunches, was still in my pjs, and the phone rang. The Hub had been in an accident.

Just like that life tumbled.

I threw on the first clothing I grabbed, told the Barbarians to make sure they rode to school on time and flew out the door. He’d been riding his pushy to work and was nearly there when the crash happened. He has no memory of it so we don’t really know what happened. Needless to say, off to emergency with a bloodied and concussed Hub.

We spent the whole day in emergency with grazes cleaned and stitched, x-rays and scans galore and emergency dental booked in. I’m so relieved he’s going to be okay with time. Nothing catastrophic has come from it.

But when I got that call, and when I first saw him, I would never have thought that is how the day would end.

You never know when life will tumble. Have you ever had life tumble?

Snapped!

  1. So relieved that S is going to be fine and no broken bones. Phew!

  2. So sorry, Anita! But relieved to know he will be okay.

I think we have all had those life tumbles. I know I have, though not in that way. One of mine was when Jeff came to power in Victoria back in 1992, and sold the school where I worked from under us, and suddenly I had no workplace any more and watched people from other schools come to help themselves to our books and equipment, and our students had only the school holidays to find another school. That man sold everything not nailed down, but he had been doing a deal with the jockeys to sell our school to them for a headquarters BEFORE the election. The bastards bragged about it in the newspapers. There were a lot of horror stories in Jeff’s Victoria, but that was mine.

    • Oh, that’s awful, Sue. I know you found another school eventually but that really was a life tumble.

  3. Oh no!!! I’m so happy that he will be ok! Prayers for a speedy recovery 🙏🏻

  4. How frightening. I am glad he is ok. You must be rattled.

    • Thanks, Maggie. I was rather rattled, but it didn’t hit until he was in the hospital and being taken care of.

  5. Oh, I’m so glad it wasn’t worse! Best wishes for a speedy recovery–physically and emotionally–for all of you! Those kinds of life tumbles can be so destabilizing.

  6. My #3 son was waiting for the green light to cross the street on his way to the bus stop after school [college] when a car ran through a red light and hit another car. Both cars spun around and one of them hit my son. I got the call late afternoon. Yep, derailed my entire evening. Both drivers had insurance so his medical expenses were covered. He was pretty bruised up but fortunately nothing broken and no concussion. Glad your hub is okay!

    • Oh my gosh, Dena. That would have been a hear-stopping phone call. He’s so lucky he wasn’t more badly injured.

In Australia we have a public health system, so medical expenses aren’t horrendous like yours (for example, the Hub’s 8.5 hours in emergency with all the tests etc they ran cost us nothing).

  7. Yes, life can change in a heartbeat. I’ve been reminded of that again and again. Glad to hear that your hubs is on the way to a full recovery!

  8. Yikes. Scary. So glad he’ll be okay. The initial call probably sent you into a panic, so it was good that things weren’t as bad.

    • Oh, yeah, I think every time you get a phone call like that adrenaline surges and your head just goes to worst case.

  9. That’s really scary. I hope he (and you and The Barbarians — I love that!) are all OK. If he has a concussion, make sure he does what the doctor tells him, especially If that means staying home for a week.

    • Luckily at the moment he’s pretty worn out form it all so getting him to rest is not too hard. But I think that might change tomorrow…

  10. I am so happy he’s fine. That is one of the two worst calls you can get (the other, for children). I can imagine your horror.

    • Oh, yeah, calls for the Barbarian’s are just as bad (been there as well). I think every parent knows that one!

  11. The world seems to get its jollies by blindsiding everyone a time or two. Glad yours wasn’t worse, mine was. You don’t want to know the gory details, or maybe I don’t want to tell them.

It is possible that the carbon forks of the bike failed. There is always some talk about them. A guy in Canberra dies from that back in 2015 and both Merida and Bianchi had massive recalls of them in 2017. Some serious bicycle people think they should only be used for racing, so they can be x-rayed to check for cracks.

    • If they’re gory, I probably don’t want to, lol.

Oh, we were living here in 2015, but I don’t remember that story. It is weird how both his forks snapped because the front wheel is perfectly fine (and straight).

  12. LOL well give him a steak to lay on it and let him feel all manly 😂😂😂😂
