Covid is affecting our cuppa

When something starts to affect our cups of tea, you know it has to be serious! Thanks to covid, some Aussie tea bags are being sold sans tags.

When you buy Madura tea there’s a little card in the box that says: Dear Customer, With the current global upheaval we have been short supplied tags for our tea bags, a matter outside of our control.

Apparently, in addition with loading our trolleys with toilet paper, tea bags were also being hoarded. According to the company, sales were up 90%. Great for the company – except the tags come from Spain, the strings and tissue paper from Germany (but assembly happens in Australia).

Of course, Spain has been locked down…hence no tea bag tags.

A classic example of how the world is a global economy.

To be honest, it doesn’t affect my tea drinking experience. In bags I drink rooibos which don’t use tags anyway, but in the cooler months (like now) I drink a lot of tea so use my tea pot (and loose leaf tea – rooibos, chai or different flavours of those). I never drink coffee.

Madura have had to offer tips on how to use their tea bags without a tag (because apparently people have never heard of a spoon!). They suggest attaching a clothes peg to the bag.

What unexpected things have you found have been affected by covid?

  1. Nothing that weird! Though I can’t seem to find yeast on the shelves in the supermarket – EVERYONE is making bread these days, it seems, something that never occurred to me. Flour and eggs seem to be back(mostly – the flour shelves are still low, but not empty). And I can’t help wondering what will happen when we run out of stuff made overseas.

    • I always have yeast in the freezer, so haven’t had to buy any – sounds like that’s just as well. Good luck finding some, Sue.

Haha oh goodness! I haven’t found anything like that! Just that its impossible to get my coffee creamer from an online grocery order. Dairies here have had to dump milk and lots of product is going to waste. But I use a non-dairy creamer from a very specific company and only one of their flavours. Every time I order delivery of my groceries it never comes. But if I go to my regular store (it doesn’t offer delivery) then I found it haha!!

    • I have no idea what coffee creamer is. We see it all the time in American TV/movies, but we have nothing like that here. We just add milk to tea and coffee. And if we don’t use dairy we just add soy, rice, oat…whatever milk is preferred to the drink.

  3. The law of unintended consequences…

    • Lol, totally, Liz. It’s going to be funny to see what other products are affected as stocks run out in Oz. Although I think a lot of products are still being shipped here – it’s just people who can’t come ashore.
