It’s the little ouchies that hurt

Last week while we were on holidays, I was throwing the ball for Ludo on the beach. He’d pelt along the sand, grab the ball and run back. Well, he’d almost run back. What he’d actually do was climb onto a low concrete ledge where he’d drop the ball to watch it bounce down onto the sand and then look at me as if to say, “Human, you know what to do, get the ball and throw”. Luckily for him, he’s trained me well.

This was a rinse and repeat activity with one exception. I guess the wind must have changed, because as he ran under a neighbouring jetty he stopped and sniffed the air. With a smell too good to pass up, he dropped the ball and went to investigate. That left me having to go under the jetty in a half-stooped crab walk to collect said ball.

For some unknown reason, I decided I’d throw the ball back down the beach. I raised my arm, pegged the ball and *whack*. My thumb collected the metal girder hanging under the jetty. Now, it wasn’t a horrific injury. There was no bruising or blood, but my thumb did swell, and it was painful.

Fast forward a week and my thumb is still swollen and sore. Today I got laser treatment and had it strapped. I felt like such a ninny explaining what had happened. For such a little injury, it sure is causing me some grief.

Has anything like this happened to you?

  1. Like breaking a toe when you ram it into a chair. Done that.

  2. Ah, fingers. Such delicate things that are absolutely indispensable. I have been doing nasty things to mine since the day I was born.

Currently, my right index finger got a splinter under its nail. That gives me an electric shock every time it comes near anything. I spent hours trying to get the splinter out, but it is the kind that comes out in pieces and the work caused more irritation,

Other high points have included smashed nail, that I had to drill a hole through to release the pressure from a blood blister.

Of course, that all pales in the light of the ligaments in my neck starting to heal. It is turning me back into being a bobble head.

    • Urgh, BF, the splinter under the nail sounds horrid (I mean, that’s why it was a form of torture!). But I am glad to hear that your neck is on the mend.

  3. Oh, dear, that must have been painful! What a way for it to happen! I hope it heals quickly. No, I’ve had plenty of toe stubs and sometimes bumped my head, even once fell over and bumped my head on the wall going down, but nothing like you describe, my main problem has been falling over unexpectedly when walking down the street. That happens often, and my knee is painful for weeks and hurts when I kneel for months.

    • Sue, that sounds terrible. Knees are quite sensitive, which isn’t helpful when they usually take the brunt of a fall.

  4. Ouch. I hope your finger is on the mend.

There was the time I… well, I don’t want to say I dislocated my thumb as it wasn’t that severe (although, I wrapped it for a week or so because it hurt so bad), but I injured my thumb. From using the bathroom. Let’s just say I was in a hurry, and my clothes didn’t move as fast as I needed them to. When the kiddos at school saw my wrapped hand, they asked what I had done. Not wanting to explain, I said, “I was stupid”. Pretty much summed it up.

    • I would imagine the last thing you would expect to happen using the bathroom would be nearly dislocating your thumb! My boss broke his foot walking across flat ground yesterday. There was a stone or something and his foot slipped and twisted and… it’s so easily done.

  5. Oh, ouch! I assume it was your dominant hand since you were throwing, and that makes everything more painful and awkward. I tend to be clumsy and have injured myself in countless small-to-medium sized ways 😉
