Motivational Monday

To the composition of novels and romances, nothing is necessary but paper, pens, and ink, with the manual capacity of using them.

  1. Yeah, that has always been my philosophy too. When speaking to kids about being a writer, I always used to show them an exercise book and a pen and say, “Want to be a writer? All you need is this and this!” and tell them how I used to use my sister’s old school exercise books, in which she had left space.

These days, of course, there are devices! 😂

    • I still have the first story I wrote (that I was proud of) which I have showed to my Barbarians. For the record, I was in grade 7 (and the story won an award at the local show).

  2. OK, I’m struggling with this. I do agree–the barriers to entry into the profession of writing are low. Is that what he means?

    • Jacqui, I interpret it to mean that anyone has the tools to be a writer, you just have to want to write.

  3. Unless you have writer’s cramp like me, then something to type on is crucial.

    • I’m with you, Liz. I can handwrite quickly, but then you have to type it out so it’s much faster to type from the get go – although I do edit on paper.
