(Not) An Orange Cake

It’s funny how the universe works. Have you ever found that when you see/hear/speak of something you all of a sudden find it everywhere? Well, that’s just happened to me. Last Friday I posted a video of some ultra-realistic cakes. Then today, I was gifted one of my own.

The cake below was a gift from my new boss. Doesn’t it look amazing? The image below that is after I cut it open. Turns out, there was no actual cake in it. The layers (from top to bottom), as far as I can tell from eating, were white chocolate crumb, orange mousse, raspberry jelly, set vanilla custard, raspberry jelly, passionfruit creme patisserie, all surrounded by dark chocolate.

Wow, was it yummy (I shared with a very happy Hub and Barbarians).

Have you ever eaten anything like this?

OOOOOOOO that looks so good! There is an Aussie pastry chef with a Netflix special and this looks like one of his – Zumbo? Maybe he’s from New Zealand but I am almost 99% sure Australia. YYUUUUUMMMMM I’ve never gotten anything like this but I’m glad you enjoyed it!

    • Yep, Zumbo. He’s Aussie and famous for macarons and croquembouche. He was a guest chef on Aussie Masterchef back in series one and that made his name. He did an Aussie baking series (there were 2 series) which didn’t do very well until they eventually made their way to Netflix, and he’s a judge on a US baking competition.

  2. That is amazing. It reminds me (oddly) of English Trifle, though that does have at least one layer of cake. Feel free to send one to me!

    • Trifle definitely needs the cake! My grandmother used to have trifle for dessert all the time and the sponge was always soaked in sherry – not a fan. I think that’s why I don’t like trifle, although I’ve had it when the cake has been soaked in orange juice and that was nicer.

  3. Very cool. It is funny how things start happening when you become aware of them. Is it because you never noticed before? Or is it because the universe starts bringing them to you? I don’t know if we’ll ever truly know the answer.

    • I often ponder exactly that, Liz. You’re right, we’ll never really know. (But it does seem to happen all the time).

  4. Yum! Looks beautiful and delicious! I think you have a nice boss 🙂

  5. That looks amazing and like it would taste amazing! Nope, never had anything like it.

    • It was really yummy. I’ve never had one of these before but would happily have it again.

  6. It looks more like a chocolatier’s effort than a pastry. It looks good and I have never seen anything like it, but I don’t go shopping for treats, I make them.

Maybe I’ll try it, always up for a challenge.

    • If you give this one a shot, BF, you need to share a photo with me (I’d ask to actually share, but the commute is a little tricky 😉 ).

      Definitely Kirsten Tibball style fare.
