The mystery of dust

Dust. It’s everywhere. I swear I have only just finished dusting and it has snuck up behind me and spread itself around again.

I find dusting to be one of those tasks that when you’ve finished is really satisfying, because there is a definite improvement that can be seen (unlike other tasks like laundry, because washing just creates piles of folding). but it is very frustrating because so soon after you’ve finished dusting, you look around and wonder why you bothered (like most housework I guess).

Where does all the dust in my house come from? I feel like there is some sort of magnetic dust attracter buried under our house. Especially as our windows and doors spend the majority of their time closed.

Do you have a magnetic dust attracter under your place?

  1. Yes! I have one if those!

But I don’t dust too much. Which is strange for someone who has environmental allergies 😂 but a lot of my dust-able surfaces are covered with things and I can’t be bothered to move them. I just dust around them.

For me its my floor. My floor is ALWAYS dirty! Even while living and working from the same room?!

No one cleans the shared areas so I’m sure that’s part of the issue. We all just clean up after ourselves. Well me and the other guy do. Party Room cleans once it gets SUPER messy and its only Nice Girl who seems to know how. But the floors haven’t been washed since I moved in. I clean my space, but not the shared because within 2 hours its destroyed again.

But my space, the floor is my enemy! It is always covered in dust. No matter how often I sweep/swiffer/mop. Its insanity.

    • I hear you on the allergies. We have carpet over half the floors (which I hate) as I am sure they harbour all kinds of nasties. I try not to think about it.

  2. I recently saw a study out of California about how laden dust is with microbes and fungi. The people cutting fire breaks all end up sick for a week when done. The implication is that the dust causes it.

I know dust, in my spare time I am remodeling our back room. It was once a screened porch, before we bought it, with paneling, a drop ceiling and vinyl sheet flooring. You would be amazed at how much dust can collect on top of the insulation and on the floor behind paneling. I had to use a oscillating tool with a carbide bit to break it loose. It had settled like concrete.

Other than that I always thought Florida was on top of the heap when it came to the amount of dust we have.

    • I reckon we’d give you a run for your money in the dust stakes, lol. Although I will confess, it’s nothing compared to the outback!

  3. I try to keep as few empty surfaces as possible with few knick-knacks so I don’t need to dust as often. And yet…

    • I dream of a place where I don’t have many surfaces either. Don’t shatter that dream 😉

  4. I had carpet in my old place, and it was easier cos I just had to vacuum it and it was done. Couldn’t see the dust. But here I have hardwood which is better for my allergies but worse for seeing the dirty haha

    • We’ve pulled up carpet before (and polished the floors under it) – the dust levels were horrific. Totally gross.

  5. We do have dust, and I’m not a huge fan of dusting. I do it because it’s necessary but I’d much rather vacuum!
