Why rain sounds better at night

As I write this it’s dark outside and raining. The most magical sound (I think) to go to sleep to. In fact, when I hear rain hitting our tin roof, I often head straight to bed, just so I can fall asleep listening to it. Tonight there is another shower on its way and I plan on going to bed just before it gets here. But why does rain sound better at night?

There are quite a few scientific reasons why rain sounds better at night:

  • Night time is when the body releases the hormone melatonin, which makes you sleepy. Coupled with the repetitive sound or the pitter patter of rain, your brain slows down and shifts in to “rest and digest” mode (The Mind Company).
  • Raindrops falling create a mix of high and low frequencies known as “pink noise”. Unlike static, this creates a consistent, pleasant rhythm that gives your brain nothing specific to focus on, allowing it to relax (Naturepedic).
  • When there is silence, your ears are more sensitive to sudden noises. The steady sound of rain covers up night noises (like creaking floorboards or a passing car), which help stop your brain from waking you thinking there is a threat (Better Sleep).
  • Since cave man, bad weather has meant staying inside. Listening to rain while tucked up in bed creates the same psychological feeling of warmth and shelter (SlepDepwear).

For me it is a combination of things. It is rhythmic and soothing. Cosy and nostalgic. Speaking of, that next shower is nearly here so I’m off to bed…

What about you, do you like falling asleep to rain on the roof?

  1. I do love falling asleep to the sound of rain, yes.so soothing! I didn’t realise there was anything scientific about it. But there are plenty of rain audios, even on YouTube.

I prefer the real thing, though, so I play audiobooks most nights,

    • Sue, I have never listened to rain audio, but I can’t imagine it being as good as the real thing. Mind you, I don’t do audio books to go to sleep with either – I imagine I’d miss half the story and forever be trying to find where I was up to!

  2. I agree, I don’t listen to the rain audios, but I guess others do, the audiobooks are always ones I am familiar with so it doesn’t matter if I miss some of the story. The whole poun5vis to get to sleep,

  3. I do love having it rain while I’m in bed. It doesn’t happen that often, so I get to enjoy it infrequently.

    • We don’t get it very often either, Liz. Our monthly average over a year is 54mL (about 2 inches) and a lot of that falls as a very light misty rain of about 1mL (0.04 inches) over a few hours, so you don’t hear it.

I used to live somewhere that got a wet season and big summer storms. I really miss that.
