A rose by any other name…

Recently a village in Austria succeeded in changing its name. As of Jan 1st, the town of F***ing will be called Fugging. It was pronounced Fooking, but of course, foreigners took great delight in using the alternative pronunciation and swiping the town signs.

Fucking, Austria - Wikipedia

I thought it might be fun to list some of the places in Australia with unfortunate names:

South Australia – Bullshit Hill, Cream Puff Corner, Mount Buggery, the Boobs and Break Wind Reserve.

New South Wales – Burrumbuttock, Delicate Nobby, Mount Great Groaner, Flirtation Hill, Rooty Hill and Boozer Creek. (Root in Oz means sex – it’s why we NEVER root for our team!)

Northern Territory – Fannie Bay and Mount Unapproachable. (Remember that in Australia, Fanny is the female genitalia)

Western Australia – Innaloo and Cockburn. (A loo in Australia is the toilet)

Tasmania – Pisspot Creek.

Queensland – Mount Blowhard, Mount Breast and a bunch of knobs including Yorkeys Knob, Two Mile Knob, Quality Knob, Iron Knob, Scrubby Knob and even just The Knob.

Victoria – Titwobble Lane and Sausage Gully.

ACT – Purves Place.

Do you have any unfortunate place names where you live?

Oooooo man!!! We have LOTS of them. Must be a colony thing šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Newfoundland has lots of weird ones

  2. No towns, but I did see a Chinese restaurant called Foo King…

  3. Ah, again our two countries are divided by a common language. I did not know that about root.

I can’t really think of any unfortunately named places off the top of my head. I’d have to do a search. I mean, there’s Death Valley, but considering how hot it gets there. . . I think my favorite is Zzyzx Road. I remember joking with my brother over how the heck one would pronounce that.

    • It’s funny how we all speak English, but yet, we don’t lol. That is one weird road name, and I have no idea how to pronounce it either!

  4. These are so very funny! We have Climax, Colorado, which is basically abandoned now, so it must not have been too exciting, ha! Either that, or the 11,318 foot elevation might be a teensy bit difficult. There’s also Stoner, Colorado, which is located near Pipe Creek.

    • Haha, they’re great, Jenny. And surely someone had a sense of humour in naming Stoner and Pip together?

  5. AJ, I strongly believe Canada will rival Australia when it comes to unfortunate place names.

We have the following place names:

Dildo, Climax, Urin, Come By Chance, Blow Me Down, Balls Creek, Saint Louis du Ha ha, Punkeydoodles, Crotch Lake, Ball’s Falls, Crapaud, Big Beaver, among others.

    • I think Australia and Canada would be a close contest, but you might pip us. We have some weird ones, often pronounced very differently to spelling, but those you listed are great, lol. I guess our Commonwealth heritage must be showing šŸ™‚
