The $1 million barramundi

Am Australian fishing contest, it’s in its sixth year and is one thing covid hasn’t stopped from going ahead.

Famous for barramundi, the Northern Territory is widely known as Australia’s top fishing destination. The Million Dollar Fish competition started in 2015 to encourage visitation and to give one lucky fisho the chance to reel in a million bucks. Now a staple on the Top End’s calendar of events, Million Dollar Fish continues to grow with more prize-tagged fish released every year. Barramundi are tagged and secretly released right across the Territory in five main fishing regions: Darwin, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Katherine and Tiwi. Since the competition launched, over 45 fishos from around Australia have reeled in tagged barramundi, and hundreds more have won epic prizes from our partners.

So far this season, $65,000 has been handed out (for non-Aussies, when you win money in a competition in Australia you don’t have to pay tax on it). Some fish are for charity – so half to the fisho and half to a charity, and there are also some that are worth $15,000 – $10k to the fisho and $5k to a mate who’s done it tough this year.

The thing that’s making headlines this year is the bloke who went fishing for the million dollar barra and instead snagged a croc.

That's not the million-dollar barra, Katherine fisho Trent de With has grabbed headlines around the world after hooking a crocodile in the Victoria River.

What’s amazing is he managed to keep his rod, tackle and lure (and that was after the croc did a few death rolls).

And if you are wondering, in the six seasons, no-one has yet caught a million dollar barramundi.

Would you fish croc infested waters for a million dollars?

  1. Oooooo sounds fun!! I haven’t been fishing since I was about 13 years old but I do (or did) enjoy it. I don’t like eating fish however LOL I used to go with my dad and his friend so they could gut and clean and eat the fish (and our two families) and I would not lol

If I was safe in the boat, I would do this contest!! Haha

  2. I haven’t fished since Girl Scouts (when I caught something), so no, not likely. But what fun for those who enjoy that sort of thing.

    • I usually fish salt not fresh water, so not sure how I’d go, but I do enjoy fishing. The last time I went fishing was 3 weeks ago when we were on holidays 🙂

  3. Sounds like a fun competition! I hope someone gets lucky one day and catches the million dollar fish! I’ve only fished in lakes, which I personally find a little boring. The croc would liven things up for sure!

    • Oh yeah, it certainly would! Lucky for him it was a freshie (freshwater croc). They’re not so bad. It’s the salties (saltwater) crocs you have to worry about… they’re the really nasty ones.
