My walking game

Geocaching is a real world treasure hunt that anyone can play. I used to play until about 3 years ago when Biggles’ arthritis meant he could only do shorter, reasonably flat walks.

Now I am walking on my own, to help distract myself from the fact I am walking without my fur-friend, I decided it would be fun to pick up geocaching again.

If you aren’t familiar with it, you create an account with Geocaching, then use a GPS (I use my phone with the c:geo app as it has a compass inbuilt) to track down the location of the cache (represented by a symbol on a map). There are a few types of caches, all represented by a different symbol. You find the cache (from teeny tiny to quite big), write your username on the log in the cache and then log the cache on your user account account.

The smiley faced locations are caches I’ve found 🙂

The thing about geocaches is it takes me to lots of different places to walk. Places I probably wouldn’t go to if it wasn’t for the caches. I’ve discovered lots of lovely corners of the city this way. It also makes the walk fun on days when I don’t really feel like heading out – I have a purpose.

Having a game to play definitely makes walking around the suburbs a lot of fun.

Do you have something to motivate you to exercise, even on the days you don’t want to?

Oh goodness my dad LOVES geocaching! My brother too but I’m not sure he does a lot of it lately. But my dad is a regular!

Motivating my exercise: the good feeling from it. At first, in April, it was just to not get a fat face from sitting all day long and to get some fresh air that isn’t in my basement apartment, but now I really enjoy it! Also the sweat! Haha!! I walk in the mornings before tutoring and I am basically a puddle when I get home! Its oddly satisfying to be so gross!!

    • That’s a great motivator as well. I’m so busy and everyday so different I can’t get a set time to write. When the sun rises earlier than it is at the moment (about 7.15am) I’ll be able to get out at a set time. But I am not very inclined to walk in the dark when it is below freezing.

  2. I hadn’t heard of this until my brother told me about it. I don’t know if he’s done it lately, but it was a bit of fun several years ago. So, I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never tried it. It might be something to do.

    • I find it fun. I especially like the puzzle caches (I can solve the puzzle at home when I like and then find the cache when I have the chance).
